IKIGAI Revealed... the JAPANESE Way to Finding Purpose and Meaning in Your Daily Life!
Ikigai is a greatly misunderstood concept, with many people thinking it is the purpose framework involving doing something you love, being good at it, while serving the world and getting paid for it.
Ikigai is NOT a sweet spot where everything in your life merges for you to suddenly find happiness, purpose and financial success.
What is Ikigai?
Simply put, IKIGAI indicates the source of value in one's life, the things that make one's life worthwhile.
On a deeper level IKIGAI is essentially the process of cultivating your inner potential and that which makes your life significant. It is a universal human experience that we all desire.
Finding Your IKIGAI Can Change Your Life!
For the Japanese, finding your Ikigai is the most honorable and rewarding thing one can do. It’s the key to a long and happy life. Ikigai is something you can have, feel, search for and find. You know you’ve found it when you’re waking up every morning excited to start the day.
If you are working a job that you despise or living an uninspired life, then it’s time to find your Ikigai.
How Did You Feel When You Woke Up This Morning?
Did you wake up excited looking forward to the day ahead?
Or did you wake wishing you had a different life?
Most of us wake up without a sense of purpose and with no desire to get to work. We seek to find happiness from material gain and in the "social" validation from others. Despite the plentiful opportunities the world affords us don't enjoy our day to day existence.
Is this your typical day?
- hit the snooze button
- struggle to get yourself out of bed
- wish it were Friday
- experience a sense of dread as you think about the day ahead
- reach for your smartphone to distract yourself from your reality
And at work, you:
- tense up as you walk into your workplace
- avoid the boss and your responsibilities
- distract yourself with social media
- watch the clock
- put off work you don't want to do to the next day
And in the evenings, you:
- have a drink or two to get over the day
- eat, snack, snack, snack - overeat
- stay up late watching Netflix or surfing the net
- do anything to avoid thinking about work
- find yourself in bed scrolling through social media right before you go to sleep
Unfortunately, for most of us this is all too common. We just don't enjoy our day to day life, and try to distract ourselves with Netflix, social media, food and alcohol to feel better. During our work week we look to the weekend in hope it will fill the void of the emptiness we feel. The weekend comes and the quickly goes and on Sunday night we feel depressed dreading the week ahead.

CHANGING YOUR LIFE IS NOT ABOUT TAKING MASSIVE ACTION
Finding meaning and purpose in life is not about "unleashing your power" or "awakening your giant within" or "taking massive action" - it's about understanding who you are, reflecting deeply on what you want in your day to day life and then making small habit changes.
Ikigai not the fist pumping, chest beating, self help guru nonsense of "sucking the juice out of life" to have anything and everything you want. And it's not the ra-ra tactics of feeling good about making dramatic life decisions and setting near impossible goals to achieve and then announcing them to the world.
Ikigai is the process of cultivating one's inner potential and that which makes one's life significant by living a life of day to day purpose in service to the people who define you.
