Have you ever thought that this very moment could be the happiest of your life? Imagine approaching each day with the idea that what you’re experiencing right now might be as joyful as it gets – or even better, that every moment has the potential to be your happiest yet. In this video, Nick Kemp explores a simple but powerful mindset shift: celebrating the present, not just with gratitude, but by truly honoring it as something exceptional.
Discovering joy in the moment
Nick: You've coined this expression Ima Iwai?
Sachiaki: Yes, I did.
Nick: So Japanese don't say this, but I do like this. And you touch on the idea that right now could be the happiest moment in our life, we just don't know. And I've had a discussion on that before with Dr. Yasuhiro Kotera on that idea that he actually said he has triplets and another child, and those first few years of him looking after his triplets was extremely difficult.
This was during the pandemic, and so his parents and his wife's parents couldn't come to visit them and help. And so he was basically saying, we just don't get any sleep. And every night, if one baby cries, the others wake up and cry, and usually he has to stand up and hold them.
And you know, when you're sleep deprived and stressed, it's probably not good for your health. But he had this approach where you never know, he might look back on that very fondly, and think, 'You know what? That was actually the happiest moment in my life looking after my children.'
So I like this approach of celebrating the now but also maybe thinking you never know this moment in your life right now could be the happiest moment. So you can kind of always be happy with this approach. So I like this idea that we should celebrate, maybe not just gratitude, but we can take it a step further and celebrate it, and that might make it more meaningful.
