One workshop with Japan's ikigai experts

Spend a day rubbing shoulders with and learning from Japan's leading authorities on the ikigai concept. This will be an in-depth study on the many perspectives of ikigai and other related cultural concepts.

Momijigari

Maple Leaf Hunting

Momijigari is an ancient Japanese tradition that translates to ‘maple leaf hunting’ — a seasonal appreciation of autumn's breathtaking hues.

We'll explore gardens that have come alive with brilliant reds, yellows and golds, and connect with nature.

Zen Meditation & Sutra Experience

Japan's Best Kept Secret

Kokeizan Eihoji Temple founded in 1313 contains two buildings that are listed as National Treasures. The temple grounds and gardens have been designated as a place of National Scenic Beauty. Here we will take in the beauty of koyo, autumn foliage, as we walk around the Zen garden after morning mediation and Shakyo, zen sutra tracing.

Make a one of a kind piece of pottery

Equipped with facilities for wheel throwing and painting, Kokei-Gama will ensure that you'll enjoy making pottery, whether it's creating a piece with the potter's wheel, hand-building, or painting. Your unique piece of pottery will be fired and shipped to your home country.

Ikigai Diet Cooking Class

The secret Japanese diet to health and longevity

Take cooking classes with the ‘Natto King, ikigai author and ikigai biohacker, Sachiaki Takamiya. You'll learn what to eat, what not to eat, and how to eat, based on traditional Japanese natural living practices which are central to most Japanese martial arts; healing arts; Zen; and the macrobiotic diet.

Aizome Indigo Dyeing Workshop

Try your hand at the Japanese art of ‘aizome’ indigo dyeing

Using traditional methods, you'll dye a shawl to take home as a souvenir. Experience a traditional Japanese craft in the studio of a 15th-generation master, continuing 430 years of family tradition, in the historic castle town of Gujo Hachiman, Gifu Prefecture.

DAY 0 - FRI - TOKYO 

  • Arrive no later than Friday afternoon and check into accommodation  
  • Orientation

DAY 1 - SAT - TOKYO 

  • Full day workshop with Prof. Ken Mogi, Prof. Daiki Kato, Dr. Shinichi Nagata and other special guests  
  • Welcome dinner with special guests

DAY 2 - SUN - TAJIMI

  • Shinkansen to Nagoya and then local train to Tajimi 
  • Villa check-in
  • Welcome Tea ceremony
  • Explore museums along Tajimi's Oribe Street
  • Ibasho welcome dinner with locals

DAY 3 - MON - TAJIMI

  • Kokeizan Eihoji  
  • Zen Meditation & Sutra Tracing 
  • Kaiseki lunch

  • Evening reflection and group discussion

DAY 4 - TUE - INUYAMA

  • Ikigai Diet Cooking classes

DAY 5 - WED -  GUJO HACHIMAN

  • Train ride to Gujo Hachiman on the Nagara Sightseeing Train

DAY 6 - THURS - GUJO HACHIMAN

  • Return to Inuyama

In Tokyo, you'll spend two nights at a flash 4-star hotel.

In Gifu is where the magic will happen.  You'll spend 5 nights the Hotel Indigo Inuyama Uraken Garden, hotel exudes a fantastic vibe, blending modern sophistication with traditional Japanese elements. The interior design is stunning, with thoughtfully curated decor that reflects the local culture and history of Inuyama. Every corner of the hotel feels like a piece of art, creating a unique and inviting atmosphere.

Then we have a one night surprise for you in Gujo Hachiman, a small, riverside town known for its pristine waterways.

We will even take care of your  luggage and have it forwarded between hotels so you can enjoy the Shinkansen ride with peace of mind.

I've had a love affair with Japan since my first visit in 1977 as a 5 year old. And having lived in Japan for 10 years and formed many meaningful friendships with Japanese people, I have experienced an intimate relationship with Japanese culture for most of my adult life. This relationship and my connections to Japan have allowed me to understand authentic perspectives of Japanese culture that I will share with you on this retreat.

Meet and learn from Japan's leading academics and ikigai thought leaders. In Tokyo, we will spend a full day with Japan's ikigai experts, discussing and debating ikigai and how it plays out in Japanese culture. During the retreat you'll have the opportunity to talk directly with Japanese from all walks of life, including academics, Zen priests, artists, and craftspeople, to gain a comprehensive understanding of the spectrum that is Ikigai.

Nick Kemp, organizer of the Ikigai Retreat, will facilitate discussions throughout the program to deepen your learning experiences and understanding of Japanese culture. Drawing from his ten years of living in Japan and his journey as a solopreneur, Nick will share valuable insights on how he built his unique coaching and education business by embracing the Japanese mindset.

Together with Nick, you will explore Ikigai and other Japanese philosophical and psychological concepts, discussing how these ideas can help you become a better coache and communicator.

Shinji Kimura, the Ikigai Retreat coordinator and interpreter, will provide additional commentary on Japanese culture, ikigai, and local customs, enriching your experience with his deep knowledge and perspectives.

WASHOKU

Enjoy authentic, seasonal Japanese food in Tokyo and Gifu-Prefecture. All meals, breakfast, lunch and dinner, as well as drinks are provided during the retreat. This includes daily afternoon tea and several special welcome and celebration dinners!
